5G Technology - The Future of Super-Fast Internet

Source: http://www.gizmodo.in

Faster internet is coming to your phone in the form of tech with fancy names like 5G and LTE-U. But just what that tech will look like and how good it will be remains to be seen.
"5G will connect everybody, and everything," Tim Baxter, President of Samsung Electronics America, breathlessly told a large gathering of reporters and industry analysts over the weekend. Baxter was on stage at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and his job was to convince the room his company is hyped on the future. "We believe in 5G's promise," he said.

Nokia, which announced new phones at the conference, was also pumped about 5G. "It's going to help shape lives for people," Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri told the audience during the company's keynote presentation. At an event earlier in the day , he said that 5G is "not hype but soon to come reality."

Faster wireless internet is on everyone's mind these days: Last week, the FCC authorized LTE-U devices on the 5GHz spectrum previously used exclusively by wi-fi and Bluetooth devices. That means telecom companies like Verizon and T-Mobile will have bigger lanes to transmit their traffic on. "This is a significant advance in wireless innovation and a big win for wireless consumers," FCC chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement . T-Mobile immediately announced plans to take advantage of the authorization by the end of 2017. The same day, Verizon declared that by the middle of 2017 5G services would be rolled out to 11 cities .

In fairness to the corporations stoking hype about faster wireless internet, there is, in fact, spectacular promise. Phones equipped for 5G, or even LTE-U will download in seconds what it takes minutes to download today. Besides faster speeds, 5G has much lower latency so you can play competitive online multiplayer games, and its better performance in dense population centers means you're less likely to find yourself with dropped calls or laggy speeds in places like New York City or Chicago.

The move to faster mobile wireless could also be a boon for rural communities and other sparsely populated parts of America. Many of those locales are currently stuck using sluggish dial-up, spotty satellite, or inconsistent 4G wireless. According to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, wireless internet could help with rural America's internet problems. It's currently number two on his Digital Empowerment Agenda for improving service in rural communities, and in a post to Medium Pai said he wants to "close the digital divide-the gap between those who use cutting-edge communications services and those who do not."

All the big companies and their leaders are saying the same thing: The 5G future is now. But to believe them means you need to forget who is actually creating the new super-fast internet: Standards organizations which speak in miracles and complicated science, telecoms and consumer electronic companies that survive on hype and broken promises, and the now anti-consumer FCC. Which means that the true promise of super-fast internet, whether LTE-U or 5G, will likely come long after the services themselves are available.

The first problem is that there is competing tech vying to bring wireless internet speeds in the gigabit range. You have LTE-U, which is sort of a half-measure between the 4G we enjoy now, and the promise of 5G in the future. A spokesperson for CTIA, a wireless industry advocacy group, explained there is a difference between LTE-U and 5G-that LTE-U is intended to "immediately improve service to Americans" while members of CTIA "are also investing in 5G technology."

Though Matt Wood of FreePress is quick to point out that LTE-U's promise could backfire. "LTE-U could be a good thing for users," Wood told Gizmodo. "The problem is if and when it's used to crowd out other unlicensed services on the spectrum." LTE-U operates on the same spectrum as traditional wi-fi and traditional wi-fi has protocols in place that keep any one router or wi-fi service from overwhelming another. Which is why everyone in your apartment complex or office building can have their own router. "If LTE-U gets aggressive and doesn't follow established protocols," Wood said, "that's bad."

Meanwhile the other much-lauded tech coming to supercharge your phones has its own problems. First, 5G isn't clearly defined yet. 5G isn't the name of specific tech, but an abbreviation for 5th generation-as in the 5th generation of mobile networks. In 2015, the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance, a European consortium of wireless vendors, researchers and mobile operators, published a white paper that attempted to define 5G. 3GPP, an international standards organization, published its own white paper earlier this month with the same goal. The International Telecommunications Union, an organization under the United Nations, and the group who often establishes standards like 5G, only issued its draft report last week. But white papers and drafts, while full of bold declarations and hard science, are not official standards. And according to the same report from the ITU, that standard isn't likely to be in place until 2020.

Thus much of the discussion currently around 5G remains so nebulous that talking about 5G is sort of like talking about the house you plan to build while only being in the "design it in Sims " phase. In light of this, the news about major 5G developments feel less like the future of mobile wireless internet and more like marketing spiels. What exactly does it mean when Qualcomm announces a 5G ready modem and mobile CPU last fall, or Intel announces a modem at CES , or Samsung announces a 5G-ready mobile CPU last week and new 5G routers over the weekend? These companies are announcing a faster tomorrow and planning to use roads that simply don't exist yet.

Part of the problem is that the wireless internet super highway of tomorrow is very expensive. Building 5G to support more than phones-to support homes and driverless cars and the Internet of Things-is going to be just as expensive as building cable has been. 5G requires base stations and cell sites just like 4G, but those base stations, in order to handle the loads demanded by all the connected devices in homes, need to be plentiful as the base stations necessary for current home internet solutions like Google Fiber and Verizon FIOS.

"Mobile is reliant on having a communications network on the ground," Phillip Berenbroick of non-profit Public Knowledge told Gizmodo, "and the economics have not changed."

And even when the infrastructure is built, you're still dealing with companies that aren't very consumer friendly. Despite all of the carriers recently re-embracing the concept unlimited data, telecoms do not have a good record for keeping the airwaves open. Profit always comes before user experience.

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all assume that because they run the roads that they can do whatever they want. Under the previous administration, the FCC was a strident supporter of consumers' rights . It hit AT&T with a hundred million dollar fine over throttling "unlimited" data for users and forced T-Mobile to clarify its own throttling policy in interactions with customers.
The current FCC is firmly anti-regulation -asking consumers and companies to fend for themselves. You should be much more cynical about its willingness to curb the transgressions of telecoms, first as $100 consumer routers find themselves angling for bandwidth against multi-million dollar cell sites in the LTE-U space, and later as those same consumers demand the 5G they pay for and are denied by telecoms more concerned with their bottom line.

The people who may one day provide everyone's internet desperately want to control it, and the new FCC is more than happy to let them . So don't expect absolute joy to come from deregulation and breathless product announcements. As far as the tech is concerned at the moment, 5G is just another buzzword meant to get you to upgrade.

Facebook launches SheLeadsTech to support women founded startups

Source:http://www.gizmodo.in
As four out of five women in India wish to become entrepreneurs, the country is missing out on a potential 15.5 million new businesses and 64 million additional jobs by not addressing the challenges facing such women, a new Facebook study said on Wednesday.

The study revealed that if just 52 percent of women were empowered to start a business today, it would not only boost economic growth, but also help to build 15.5 million new businesses, and create 64 million additional jobs -- all by the end of 2021.

"If we were to harness the largely untapped potential of women's entrepreneurship and provide them greater support, it could lead to more jobs being created, economic growth and more diverse and representative small business communities," Ankhi Das, Director of Public Policy, Facebook India, South and Central Asia, told reporters here.

Women have had tremendous potential but often lacked platforms that can harness their potential, but Facebook is opening up great opportunities for them, added Aruna Sundarajan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

"We are very optimistic about partnering with platforms like Facebook to empower women. We are trying to forge deep partnerships with platforms like Google, Cisco and Intel for the betterment of woman's livelihood through technology," Sundarajan told the gathering.

Ahead of the International Women's Day that falls on March 8, Facebook also launched "SheLeadsTech", a programme that will give women-founded/co-founded start-ups access to a year-long programme that provides tools, mentorship and resources to help overcome some of the barriers they face.

"Facebook, with its two powerful initiatives #SheMeansBusiness and the new #SheLeadsTech programme, has opened up lot of opportunities for young woman entrepreneurs whether in small towns (with access to internet) or suburban areas -- with or without access to financial resources," Sundarajan emphasised.

The year-long #SheLeadsTech programme will include access to "FBStart" which grants access to FBStart tools and resources and mentorship through a regular cadence of interactions with a pool of mentors.

According to the findings, the most commonly cited reason that prevents women from setting up their business in India is the constraint of family responsibilities or commitments (38 percent).

Other key barriers are lack of access to finance (29 percent), worry over personal financial security (30 percent), and having an idea but not knowing where to get started (30 percent).

Interestingly, small businesses on Facebook tell a different story.

There are more than two million active small businesses Pages on Facebook in India -- and an increasing number of women are using this community to start and grow successful businesses.

In the last five years (between 2012 and 2016), the number of new women-owned SMB Pages on Facebook in India has increased seven-fold, growing 85 percent year on year from 2015 to 2016.

Nearly 87 percent of women surveyed also agree that having access to the right digital tools and support would help them get their business off the ground.

"We see amazing examples of how digital can be the equalizer on Facebook every day. How it gives women access to new opportunities, new markets, new ideas, all from their own home," Das added.

Facebook's SheMeansBusiness was launched on International Women's Day in 2016.

Through this initiative, Facebook has visited 18 cities across six states in India, providing skills training to more than 14,000 small business and self-help groups including 4,500 women entrepreneurs across the country.

This year, Facebook is targeting eight new states including Jammu and Kashmir.

"With technology empowering Indians all over, women can benefit the most. It is because traditionally women do not have access to other forms of support. The easiest way to reach out is technology platforms which gives them ascess to best practices, mentors as well as help in crowdfunding," Sundarajan said.

Donald Trump Hails 'New National Pride', Lays Out Agenda For America

Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com
Heralding a "new chapter of American greatness," President Donald Trump stood before Congress for the first time Tuesday night and issued a broad call for overhauling the nation's health care system, significantly boosting military spending and plunging $1 trillion into upgrading crumbling infrastructure.

Striking an optimistic tone, Trump declared: "The time for small thinking is over."

Trump's address came at a pivotal moment for a new president elected on pledges to swiftly shake up Washington and follow through on the failed promises of career politicians. His opening weeks in office have been consumed by distractions and self-inflicted wounds, including the bungled rollout of a sweeping immigration and refugee executive order that was blocked by the courts.

Trump, who typically relishes flouting political convention, embraced the pomp and tradition of a presidential address to Congress. He stuck largely to his script, made occasional overtures to Democrats and skipped the personal insults he so often hurls at his opponents.

The president was greeted by enthusiastic applause as he entered the House chamber, though it was filled with Democrats who vigorously oppose his policies and many Republicans who never expected him to be elected. Most Republican lawmakers have rallied around him since the election, hopeful that he will act on the domestic priorities they saw blocked during President Barack Obama's eight years in office.

Topping that list is undoing Obama's signature health care law and replacing the sweeping measure. Trump offered a basic blueprint of his priorities, including ensuring that those with pre-existing conditions have access to coverage, allowing people to buy insurance across state lines and offering tax credits and expanded health savings accounts to help Americans purchase coverage. He suggested he would get rid of the current law's requirement that all Americans carry insurance coverage, saying that "mandating every American to buy government-approved health insurance was never the right solution for America."

Making a direct appeal for bipartisanship, Trump turned to Democrats and said, "Why not join forces to finally get the job done and get it done right?"

Democrats, now firmly ensconced in the minority, sat silently while Republicans stood and cheered. Some wore blue, pro-health care buttons that read "Protect our care," and dozens of Democratic women wore white in honor of the suffrage movement.

Trump was vague in his call for tax reform, another Republican priority. He promised "massive tax relief for the middle class" and a reduction in corporate tax rates, but glossed over how he would offset the cuts.

The president also urged Congress to pass a $1 trillion infrastructure package financed through both public and private capital.

"The time has come for a new program of national rebuilding," he said.

Trump sent unexpectedly mixed messages on immigration, one of his signature campaign issues. He pledged to vigorously target people living in the U.S. illegally who "threaten our communities and prey on our citizens." But he told news anchors before his speech that he was open to legislation that could provide a pathway to legal status, and he told Congress he believed "real and positive immigration reform is possible."

First lady Melania Trump sat with special guests who were on hand to amplify the president's agenda, including the family members of people killed by immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. The widow of former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia also sat alongside Mrs. Trump, a reminder of the president's well-received nomination of federal appeals court Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill Scalia's seat.

The majority of Trump's address centered on the domestic, economic-focused issues that were at the center of his presidential campaign. His national security message centered largely on a call for significantly boosting military spending and taking strong but unspecified measures to protect the nation from "radical Islamic terrorism."

Underscoring the human cost of those efforts, Trump honored Chief Special Warrant Officer William "Ryan" Owens, who was killed in a raid in Yemen during his first days in office. Owens' widow sat in the guest box with tears streaming down her face as the crowd stood and applauded at length.

Owens' death, as well as the killing of several civilians, have raised questions about the effectiveness of the raid. Pushing back, the president said Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had assured him that the operation generated "large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies."

Trump also voiced support for NATO but reiterated his call for partner countries to meet their financial obligations to the military alliance. Trump has previously called NATO "obsolete," setting some allies on edge about his commitment to the partnership.
